A note about email hate spam

So I recently received an email from someone I used to be very close to, but over the past couple years have kind of grown apart from.  Not going to mention names.  Anyways, this email was along the lines of the same things you always see about people claiming our president wasn’t born in the United States or “You know what’s wrong with this country?!?!”  Here is the email, unedited with the exception of removing any personal information.

For once in my life, I am truly at a loss of words to make a comment.

Ok all you fighters for immigrants rights. Here is one of the reasons we as the ones that have to pay for welfare of these immigrants, depriving the natural citizens, have a problem with it. One of the several reasons the U . S . A . is falling apart too.

Enough said.

This needs to travel around the U.S.A. Don’t let it die folks.

(Picture taken in LA in May 2010)

For some reason, this email really upset me.  I think it must have just been the combination of who it was from and the subject matter.  The person that I received this from was someone I used to have a very high opinion of.  I thought they were a progressive forward thinking individual and not subject to the garbage that had been floating around lately.  I was heart broken and sad to see I was wrong.  So I simply sent them an email reply stating “Please don’t send me this type of garbage anymore.”  Moments later I receive an IM from the person:

Them:
i get emails i dont always approve of from people
but i dont tell them to no longer send them to me…
even when i disagree i think its at least an
opportunity to open one’s mind in considering
what is within the message
anyway nothing personal was meant by it
Me:
It’s just hateful propaganda and I have no
interest in it.
Them:
i felt it was an accurate depiction
so we disagree

again nothing personal

They promptly logged off before I could reply again.  Wrapping this up as freedom of speech and then making it sound as if I am the closed minded one sent me into a rage.  With no other outlet, I composed an email reply to them and here it is:
Of all the people I know, I never thought you would perpetuate trash like this.  For every idiot protester like this, I’m sure I can find at least one idiot redneck protesting against him that is equally bad or worse.  What Arizona is doing is at best a violation of everyone’s civil rights and at worse a gross act of government supported racism.  If some government official asked me for identification for no other reason than to prove I was a US citizen I would tell them to blow it out their ass.

America’s immigration policies are as backwards as our drug policies.  If we would spend more time helping countries like Mexico strengthen their industrial and social infrastructure, it would make long term progress in decreasing illegal immigration simply by making it unnecessary.  It would also take away one more thing that the criminal organizations in Mexico use to fuel their business since it would make human trafficking obsolete.

Every human has basic rights no matter where they are born or who their parents are.  I would never turn away a person in need and think that doing so would be morally reprehensible.  So sure, someone is being an idiot, but there are a lot of people being idiots all around the world.  It doesn’t make any of them less human.

So like I said, please don’t send me this garbage and please don’t try to wrap it up in the guise of open mindedness.  The only reason that the USA is even remotely “falling apart” is because no one is willing to take responsibility or admit that we might have something wrong.  It’s always the black peoples fault, or the white people’s fault, or the illegal immigrants, or the people that smoke pot, or “the gays,” or the Republicans, or the Democrats.  It’s America’s fault.  Why not do something to change the world than just regurgitate this slop?  All we have done is escalate the same policies we’ve had for the past 40 years and it has only gotten worse.

If you want to have an intelligent discussion about social issues, that’s fine and I’m game.  I have no interest in backwards thinking chain mail spam.

People, I don’t claim to have answers.  Smarter people than me have tried to come up with answers.  All I know is that what we have been doing isn’t working when it comes to some of the larger issues in the country.   Let me give you an example.
Lets say a fire breaks out in your kitchen.  For some reason, you have a cup of gasoline on the counter.  You know that sometimes liquid can put out a fire, so you throw the cup of gas on the fire only to have it grow.  You don’t go out into the garage and get another cup of gas.  It didn’t work, it’s time to move on and try something else before you burn your own house down.
I think I’m just rambling at this point, but I mean for fuck’s sake people… Aren’t we grown up to get past all this childish bickering and name calling?  Can’t we all just sit down and hash out a solution?  Shit….

I can’t believe that picture doesn’t bother you. If you have your opinion, at least argue it’s not real!

I’m sure it’s real. Though in the long run it’s one idiot in a crowd of many, why should I care? There are plenty of people at plenty of rallies that are assholes, that doesn’t mean that everyone in the group is an asshole. Otherwise we would have to assume everyone in the Tea Party movement is a racist idiot that can’t spell simple words, understand complex political ideas or read a book about political history.

Sure, it would be easy for me to feel that way about the entire group, but it wouldn’t be true. Just like how this one asshole doesn’t invalidate the issues at hand. It’s just unfortunate that he’s that stupid.

Try not using all caps Lee…

I’m sorry if you want me to provide citations and what not, but I don’t care enough to do that. This isn’t a news or political site, so you’re really barking up the wrong tree… but… like I said in the post, what we’re doing now isn’t working. Period. Escalation has never worked in the past when it comes to border patrolling. Whether it’s drugs, contraband or people, escalation and increasing of man power does little to nothing in terms of affecting what comes across the border.

The smugglers that traffic people, which is how many people get into our country, have never had a problem getting people into this country. To top it off, those smugglers use their profits from the trafficking to fund things that ever more dubious in nature such as gun running and drugs.

The biggest complaint people have about illegal immigrants is that they’re not paying taxes and receiving the benefits of living in this country. The easiest way to get around that? Allow them to work and tax them. Right now it’s worth the risk to some employers to hire illegal aliens. Make the playing field level, require them to pay taxes and receive a minimum wage. You have now removed all benefit of employing illegal aliens. We then use the money we save on border enforcement to help Mexico strength it’s infrastructure, which would make America less and less attractive to illegal immigrants. It would also start taking away a major source of income for the criminal organizations.

Like I said, what we’re doing now isn’t working. Is what I laid out above the answer? Maybe… maybe not. I didn’t go to school for political science. All I know is stepping up a system that has historically NOT worked seems like a giant waste of time and resources.
