The Dose: July 20th, 2012

Hey everyone, sorry I haven’t posted anything the past few days. Intermitent internet service, lots of work to be done, and me just being a touch lazy really shelved any plans I had for the site for a couple days. I hope you can find it in your ever expanding hearts to forgive me. Thanks. I knew you would understand. So lets get to it! Here is today’s Dose:

It was bound to happen. There are three things that will always be on the internet: angry nerds, porn, and adorable cat videos. Seeing as this is a non-pornographic site and I am a nerd filled with rage, that only leaves one last thing… kitten attack video! MEOW!

Next up, a girl from San Diego Comic Con dressed up as Derpy Hooves from My Little Pony. Simply adorable. Nice to see a MLP cosplay that hasn’t been stricken by the “slutty” Halloween curse. For some reason that really bothers me when it comes to cosplay. I find it especially strange when people sexualize characters from children’s cartoons. To each their own I guess.
As someone who has battled with their weight for decades and has seen the not-so-subtle changes in commonly accepted nuitrition, this study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Basically, they split a group of patients into three groups. One got a low fat diet (more or less the traditionally recommended diet), a low carb-diet (think Atkins or keto), and a diet that restricted the use of refined carbs like non-whole grain and sugar. The results will come as a surprise to many, as the one that showed the most short term negative side effects was actually the traditional “low fat” diet. The low fat diet seemed to cause the greatest decrease in energy expenditure, an unhealthy lipid pattern, and insulin resistance. Even if you’re not a tubby whore like me, it’s an interesting read.
Lastly, here’s a little video I saw on reddit awhile back. Apparently this cool kid requested a Team Fortress 2 themed birthday party, so his parents decided to let him “uncrate” some items for his presents. Cute little video. Team Fortress fans really are some awesomely unique and often creative people.

I am also a fellow scale tipper. Pretty much all my life i have neen on the larger side. Late last year I hit the 310 mark. Then a friend of mine at work literally had a stroke in front of me one morning at work. That was my moment. Since i quit amoking and gave up fast food. I am not subscribing to any particular diet but i am making better choices of what i am eating. Lastly I am working out everyday. You have to. I have been sitting on my ass getting fat for 38 years. I got my lazy on. My results have been great. Down 60lbs and counting. Also i have no specific weight goal in mind so i am not placing any undo pressure on myself. If i have a week that i put in my work and didnt lose then it wasnt a week to lose. Alright the train has derailed. Not sure what i was hetting at so bit i typed too much to erase it.

Yeah, it’s really not just one change that makes the difference. Kind of like just cutting out fat isn’t the answer. Studies are now showing that many people have less energy on low fat, high carb diets regardless of their calorie intake. So when you’re already fat, which can either be caused by or result in being lazy, and then your diet is working against you? Yeah… it’s not going to work.

You really need a solid combination of diet change and physical activity. Just one will only get you so far.

Say something... I dare you.
